I like fertilizer stocks as a long-term play on the rising global demand for food-which is why this stock is a member of my long-term Jubak Picks 50 portfolio, but I'd like to see some signs that potash pricing has turned before buying. Despite its name, Potash of Saskatchewan also sells nitrogen fertilizers. Fundamentals for those fertilizers look to be bottoming, and the fourth quarter might see flat prices. I'd think about using that as an indicator for a buy. (I'd also like to see a few more delays/cancelations of mine expansions such as Mosaic's (MOS) and Vale's (VALE) recent news of a total of 6.3 million metric tons in delays.)

Vale (NASDAQ: VALE) announced that its second quarter iron ore output rose 13 percent from a year ago to 79.4 million metric tons. Shares gained 1.53 percent, closing at $14.56.

When compared to other big iron ore producers like BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) and Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) , Cliffs Natural Resources clearly faces margin pressure. This means that during the coming years of increased iron ore oversupply and decreased Chinese steel demand, Cliffs Natural Resources will have less power at its disposal to improve operations and maintain margins.

That may not be a direct bearish call on Petrobras (NYSE: PBR), Brazil's state-owned oil giant, but it was less than a year ago at the Ira Sohn Conference that Chanos called Petrobras and Vale (NYSE: VALE), the world's largest iron ore producer two of his favorite shorts.
