Top 5 Freight Stocks To Own For 2015

In what UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) CEO Scott Davis calls "a win-win-win for our people, customers, and shareholders," the company has reached a "tentative agreement" with nearly 250,000 Teamsters Union employees on two five-year contracts. The first deal addresses union employees in UPS' packaging unit; the other agreement impacts freight employees, the sides recently announced.

According to the Teamsters announcement, both agreements will "protect [union members'] health-care benefits, provide substantial wage increases and significantly raise contributions to pension and health and welfare benefits." The deals would affect UPS' 140,000 package employees, and the nearly 110,000 Teamsters Union employees in its freight unit.

In addition to the health-care benefits and higher wages, Teamsters said the new agreement would result in 2,000 full-time jobs from the ranks of existing UPS part-time package employees.

China Is Punishing American Companies By Not Addressing This Issue

Big U.S. steel makers like Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) , U.S. Steel (NYSE: X  ) , and AK Steel (NYSE: AKS  ) have long complained about foreign steel being dumped into the U.S. market. China has been one of the more contentious issues on that front. Although the Chinese government has said it wants to reign in its steel industry, it may have a harder time than it hopes.

Too much steel
Although China isn't the only country accused of dumping steel into the U.S. market, it is one of the biggest problems. Nucor CEO John Ferriola noted in his company's third quarter conference call that China has "at least 300 million tons" of excess capacity. Meanwhile, AK Steel and U.S. Steel have been highlighting a couple of dumping case wins in recent conference calls. While those cases may not explicitly include China, excess capacity in one country has a clear impact on other nations in the global steel trade.

(Source: 螺钉, via Wikimedia Commons)

China, however, isn't oblivious to the problem. As a nation it's still developing relatively quickly compared to the United States. However, growth has slowed recently and China's citizens are increasingly concerned about pollution. So, China has called for old and dirty steel mills to shut down.

Hot Healthcare Equipment Companies To Buy For 2016

That's music to the ears of steel mills like U.S. Steel, Nucor, and AK Steel. According to ArcelorMittal USA's CEO Mike Rippey, "U.S. steelmaking facilities are running at only 77 percent capacity." It's expensive to operate a steel mill, so running at such low capacity levels is a big blow to profitability. For example, U.S. Steel and AK Steel have both bled red ink for half a decade.

No easy fix
You might think that an authoritarian government like China's could quickly take control of this situation. However, that may not be the case. For example, "Mr. Han," a shopkeeper in Tangshan, an important Chinese steel hub, recently told Australia Network News (ANN) that, "They start the factory again after the officials leave." That won't help the overcapacity issues that Nucor has been highlighting.

(Source: Alfred T. Palmer, via Wikimedia Commons)

Market forces, however, might lend a helping hand. Xu Zhongbo, of Beijing Metal Consulting, told ANN that, "Since the beginning of this year, state owned enterprises lost money and 80 per cent of private steel mills began to lose money." With China's new willingness to accept bankruptcies, it's likely that at least some steel mills will be allowed to go under. But, Zhongbo noted that, "This situation will continue for the next three to four years." If U.S. Steel and AK Steel are any example, it could go on for another five years...

For example, Zhongbu earlier told The Chicago Tribune that China is "only closing steel mills that are already dead." Smaller unprofitable mills are basically the ones being targeted. And industry watcher Wood Mackenzie believes there's so much extra capacity in China that closures won't actually curtail overall production. The company is calling for record iron ore imports into China this year.

Bad for you, bad for me
While continued overproduction in China could be a blessing for supplier in the iron ore and met coal space, the same isn't true in the global steel industry. If there's another "three to four years" to go before China's overcapacity is sopped up, AK Steel and U.S. Steel may still have some bleeding to do before they're done.

In the end, you should probably expect oversupply issues to dog the steel industry for at least a few more years. U.S. Steel and AK Steel, which have been losing money, are probably best avoided by conservative investors. Nucor, which has only lost money once in the last decade, is a better bet.

Best Undervalued Stocks For 2015

There is an enormous amount of discussion and even controversy regarding various opinions as to whether the stock market is currently undervalued or overvalued. Some pundits, such as Professor Robert Shiller, use a statistical analysis that argues for overvaluation based on an alleged reversion to the mean. Currently, Prof. Shiller calculates the Schiller P/E on the S&P 500 at 22.4 versus the historical norm of 16. In contrast, the actual P/E ratio of the S&P 500 based on current and near earnings estimates is 13.6, which is below the historical norm of 15 to 16, thereby indicating that the market is moderately undervalued.

Regardless of which side of that argument turns out to be correct, we have long argued that focusing on market valuations is not nearly as important as focusing on individual stock valuations. Is has been our experience spanning over four decades that regardless of whether wee in a bear or a bull market, there always exists fairly valued, undervalued and overvalued stocks. Obviously, you expect to find more bargains in a bear market and fewer in a bull market. Nevertheless, there will always be some of both, and therel always be some that are fairly valued.

Furthermore, in just the last three years, the upstream E&P industry has spent on average $600 billion per year yielding only a net increase in global oil production coming from the shale deposits in North American. Due to the significant advancements in horizontal drilling and multistage fracking natural gas prices are generally one-颅hird of what they are in Europe or Asia. Many of the national oil companies in the Middle East do not have the experience to do EOR or production optimization on their own. This is where oil services specialists come into play. Both Core Laboratories and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) saw sizable upticks in revenue from the Middle East region. If Middle Eastern oil production trends were to continue, it would not be a stretch to see these two companies as well as other oil services grow their Middle Eastern business substantially over the next several years.

So what is GE to do? The O&G segment is a very fast growing and nicely profitable business that is synergistic with the rest of GE's industrial operations. Yet it is such a small part of the company, its valuation is being diluted by GE's other businesses. A spin-off would surely unlock value. That said, a spun-off O&G company would be a relatively small player compared to a companies like Schlumberger (SLB), with $42 billion in 2012 revenue and a P/E=19.5, and even Haliburton (HAL), with $24.8 billion in 2012 revenue and a P/E=23.6. But both these companies trade at a premium valuation to GE (P/E=17.8) despite GE's higher dividend yield (3.1%).

Alamy HOUSTON -- Halliburton says it lost $18 million in the first quarter, pulled down by $637 million in charges related to its role in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. But it made money if unusual items are excluded, beating Wall Street expectations. The oil services company's loss amounted to 2 cents a share. That compares with net income of $627 million, or 68 cents a share, a year earlier. Halliburton Co. (HAL), which is in talks to settle claims against it related to the oil spill, said that excluding the charges it posted adjusted earnings of 67 cents a share. That beat the 57 cents that analysts expected. The Houston company, which provides a variety of services for the petroleum industry, is benefiting from a boom in U.S. oil production, which is at the highest level in more than two decades. At the same time, Halliburton's natural gas business has slowed as drillers slowed production due to falling prices for the fuel. Revenue rose slightly to $6.97 billion from $6.87 billion. Analysts expected $6.88 billion. Halliburton shares jumped $1.44, or 3.9 percent, to $38.65 in premarket trading an hour before the market opening. Halliburton is the biggest provider of oil field services in North America, including hydraulic fracturing, a technology that has helped unlock large supplies of oil and natural gas from shale rock formations in the U.S. North American revenue fell 11 percent to $3.71 billion, while operating income tumbled 43 percent to $605 million. Dave Lesar, the company's chairman, president and CEO, said a drop in Halliburton's rig count and pricing pressures in North America were more than offset by the company's growing international business. International revenue increased 21 percent from a year ago. For the full year, Halliburton still expects total international revenue growth in the "low teens," he said. Rival Schlumberger Ltd. (SLB), which has a larger international business, said Friday that its revenue climbed in region

Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise.

"Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise. Just Mayo does neither," the complaint states, noting that the Hampton Creek product's oils separate when heated. Unilever holds the biggest share of the U.S. mayonnaise market, which is estimated to be worth $2 billion annually, according to market-research firm Euromonitor. That's more than twice the size of the ketchup market. Hampton Creek didn't return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday morning. The company told The Wall Street Journal that it doesn't mislead consumers because it advertises the absence of eggs as a benefit. But a marketing professor hired by Unilever to survey consumers found in an online survey that more than half of thought Just Mayo was mayonnaise when they saw the label. The professor said in a document filed last week that 822 consumers participated in the research. Just Mayo is the first product from Hampton Creek, a San Francisco-based startup that touts the backing of Microsoft (MSFT) founder Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing, Asia's wealthiest person. Just Mayo is available at Dollar Tree (DLTR), Whole Foods Market (WFM) and Kroger (KR) stores, among other locations. Hellmann's celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Mayonnaise originated in France in the 1700s, when a chef seeking to make a creamy sauce combined oil and egg yolks.

Hot Freight Stocks To Buy For 2015

The United States is overflowing with oil. In fact, the Energy Information Administration thinks the country could realistically produce 6 million to 8 million barrels of oil per day over the next three decades. The institution's high estimate exceeds 10 million barrels per day. Canadian production isn't doing too bad, either, although supporting infrastructure is less developed for our northerly neighbors. That bodes well for the companies pumping it out of the ground, but it also represents a big opportunity for the companies transporting and refining crude oil.

Here are four of the best investments supporting oil drillers.

Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  )
Canadian National Railway is one company trying to bail-out Canada's ailing pipelines. In 2010 the company didn't move one carload of crude oil. This year it is expected to "choo-choo" its way to 60,000 carloads of oil from the country. This business in particular has boosted sales and income each year since 2010. Investors have to like that growth and where things are headed in the long term. Canadian National is cutting checks totaling $1.9 billion this year to repair its railways, accommodate growth needs, and purchase new freight cars, including new natural-gas powered models.

As the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) has gained 18.1% this year, Annaly Capital shares sank approximately 17.6%; American Capital Agency and Two Harbors are down 22% and 12%, respectively. The whole real estate stock sector has been under pressure, as evidenced by the iShares US Real Estate (IYR) drop of 1.3% year-to-date. Despite a steadily improving actual real estate market, the mREIT group has faced criticism about what damage could ensue to held asset portfolio values in a rapidly rising rate environment. Also, the mortgage REITs' abilities to manage their businesses would become complicated by a rising cost of borrowing matched against longer duration income streams at low relative yields. Reduced dividends result from less income, and lower security values are priced in.

Top 5 Up And Coming Companies To Buy For 2015

Once the quintessential glamour stock, Apple (AAPL) has been anything but glamorous since hitting its record high price in 2012. Excluding enhancements to existing products, the company hasn unveiled anything truly new since it launched the iPad in April 2010. With the death of visionary CEO Steve Jobs 18 months later, it no wonder investors worry that Apple is no longer a growth company. We think, though, that Wall Street has gotten too pessimistic and that this is a good time to bite into Apple stock.

On Monday, Nomura Securities reported that it has begun coverage on apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF).

The firm has initiated coverage on ANF with a “Buy” rating and $43 price target. This price target suggests a 15% upside from the stock’s current price of $36.45.

Analyst Simeon Siegel noted: “We believe ongoing top-line deceleration has been priced in (shares are -25% YTD vs. +3% for our coverage group) and expense initiatives coupled with a healthy cash balance make ANF attractive at current levels as a longer-term investment. With minimal visibility on trends, we lack conviction in a near-term comp recovery and believe Street estimates beyond 3Q may still prove too high. However, we believe that cheap valuation (11.6x PE, 4x EBITDA, and 9.6% FCF yield for FY14), $0.80-0.85 of expense-driven EPS support and $0.20+ benefit from share repurchases make ANF attractive at current levels for investors willing to wait. We estimate FY13/FY14 EPS of $1.90/$3.10 vs. Street at $2.10/$3.12. Our target price of $43 is based on 14x our FY14 estimate, versus the peer group average multiple of 14x and the company historical average of 14.8x.”

Abercrombie & Fitch shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Monday. The stock is down 24% YTD.
