Another player that operates heavily within this industry, but in a slightly different fashion, announced earnings today. Shares of tool companySnap-On (NYSE: SNA  ) rose 7.76% today after beating estimates on both the top and bottom lines. Revenue came in at $797.5 million for the quarter, a 5.9% increase from last year and higher than the $779.5 million analysts were looking for. Earnings per share hit $1.60, again higher than the $1.56 that was expected. One of the areas that management would like to focus on moving forward is expanding its vehicle repair garage, which again would make sense given the average age of vehicles on the road today.

Tech giant Intel (INTC) reported its second quarter earnings after Tuesday’s closing bell, beating analysts’ estimates and announcing a major buyback.

    INTC Earnings in Brief

The company reported EPS of$0.55, beating the analyst expectation of $0.52. Revenues for the quarter came in at $13.8 billion, edging out the expected $13.69 billion figure that the Street expected. The company authorized a $20 billion increase to its share repurchase program and forecasts buybacks will amount to $4 billion for Q3.

    CEO Commentary

CEO Brian Krzanich had this to say on the results: “Our second-quarter results showed the strength of our strategy to extend the reach of Intel technology from the data center to PCs to the Internet of Things. With the ramp of our Baytrail SoC family, we have expanded into new segments such as Chrome-based systems, and we are on track to meet our 40 million unit tablet goal. In addition, we hit an important qualification milestone for our upcoming 14nm Broadwell product, and expect the first systems to be on shelves during the holidays.”

    INTC’s Dividend

The company made no mention of a dividend increase. INTC’s last dividend was paid out on June 1st and we expect the company to declare its next dividend sometime before the end of July.

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) is up 1.7%, partly on reports that the company is getting closer to launching a television service. These rumors have been floating around for a while now, but Intel seems closer to closing a deal than it has ever been before. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) also said a Haswell chip and Thunderbolt ports are key features of the new Macbook Air and Mac Pro, both announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference today. These aren't new wins for Intel, but they keep the company involved with a key customer.

Despite being a relatively new entrant into the smartphone and tablet market, NVIDIA has been well accepted. Year-over-year growth in 2012 was mostly flat, with the company transitioning from its Tegra 3 to next-generation Tegra 4 chips, but that's still a lot better than I can say for some of its peers. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , a company that I think has a strong future tied to smartphone and tablet hardware as well as cloud computing, saw its market share tick up by just 0.2% in 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. Furthermore, Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM  ) , which has significantly more market share than NVIDIA, will slowly cede that share over time in the U.S., since its processing chips are often found in older 3G-capable smartphones. Broadcom may find a lot of success overseas, but I'd say its smartphone market share is only set to tumble in the United States.
