Baseball writers recently put three players into the Hall of Fame. The voters were 571 members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. There is no CEO Hall of Fame picked by writers from business magazines, websites, television business shows, or newspapers. However, there should be.
There are several CEO of the Year awards. But they are chosen by the editors of a small number of magazines and websites. There is no consistency among them. A few are no better than popularity contests. Most only cover the successes of the most recent year of a chief executive officer’s tenure. Almost none, if any, look back over a CEO’s entire career and what he or she has done for shareholders, customers, employees and the communities a company serves.
One criticism of a CEO Hall of Fame would be that it would not provide much of a service. That is not entirely true, if it is true at all. There is a difference between Bill Gates of Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and MikeJeffries, the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF). Jeffries has gone a long way to ruin a great brand, and he has been paid tens of millions of dollars in the process. Gates continues to be considered one of the great business innovators of the past hundred years.

Douglas C. Lane reduced its stake in lots of companies, including telecom company CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL ) . The company sports a tempting 6% dividend yield, and that's after it cut its payout by about 25%, in part to focus more on share buybacks. The company landed a hefty Pentagon contract in April, with a possible 10-year value of $750 million and has been moving into promising arenas such as cloud computing (via its purchase of SAVVIS). CenturyLink carries more than $19 billion in debt, but it's also generating significant free cash flow, near $3 billion annually. Its revenue growth has been accelerating in recent years and has long been in double digits annually.

For example, Digital Realty (DLR) is the undoubted leader in the data storage industry, with a market cap of $8.3B. Its other three competitors, DuPont Fabros (DFT), CoreSite Realty (COR) and CyrusOne (CONE), have market caps of $1.5B, $930M and $430M respectively. In addition, with the level of complexity involving Digital's business making it immensely difficult for companies to operate data centre facilities, the company is in a good position for future growth. The company also has a wide network of 595 tenants (significantly more than other competitors), including CenturyLink (CTL), AT&T and Morgan Stanley (MS). This further secures its long term business prospects and also its dominance over its competitors.

Shares of CenturyLink (CTL) have dropped more than 2% today on reports that it’s trying to buy cloud-computing company Rackspace Hosting (RAX).
ZUMAPRESS.comBloomberg has the details on the potential transaction:
CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace, which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be identified talking about private information. One person said a deal may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.
Citigroup’s Michael Rollins thinks a deal will depend on valuation:
Valuation matters. We believe CenturyLink can financially digest a possible acquisition of Rackspace under $50 per share based on our scenario analysis. We believeCenturyLink could pay forRackspace using up to 50% in cash to keep net debt financial leverage near or below 3x on our pro forma analysis. While PF FV/OIBDA may not move substantially paying up to $50/share, we estimate FCF/share and norm. EPS could be diluted by up to (11%) in the first year. Based on our initial analysis, we would take a neutral view for a possible buyout under $40 per share, but believeCenturyLink shares could trade lower if it were to pay more than $50 for Rackspace. We remain Neutral on CenturyLink largely based on valuation.
Shares of CenturyLink have dropped 2.2% to $40.55 at 1:18 p.m., while Rackspace has gained 5% to $39.10.

I grew up on Hilroy notebooks, a brand brought to the table in its 2012 merger with MeadWestvaco (MWV) Consumer and Office Products division. MWV shareholders received one-third of an ACCO share for every MWV share. Since the deal was completed, ACCO stock has lost 42% of its value.

The company has a current ROE of 14.5% which is higher than the industry median. Also, it is higher than the ones exhibit by Sealed Air Corp (SEE) and Sonoco Products Co (SON). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking at those levels, MeadWestvaco Corp (MWV) and Packaging Corp of America (PKG) could be the options. It is very important to understand this metric before investing, and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.
